Are there potential options to reduce the out of pocket cost?
1. Medicare via the GP and a Mental Health Treatment Plan
Accessing support from a christian clinical psychologist means you may be eligible to access up to 10 Medicare rebates per calendar year. The current rebate is $137.05 per rebate. To access this, you can attend you GP and receive a referral to see Reed Clark at Cognitive Clarity under a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP).
Once the session fee has been paid in full and been conducted, a Medicare rebate claim can be lodged for session rebate. This reduces the out-of-pocket gap payment to approximately 50%. Medicare will then assess and approve your invoice, and deposit the rebate into your nominated bank account registered with Medicare. This generally within 24 hours.
The referral needs to be completed by your GP PRIOR to the session to access any rebate, as Medicare will not ‘backdate’ a reimbursement. In situations where you attend sessions prior to a completed referral under a MHTP, you will not be able to access the rebate for those sessions. You would then remain eligible for the potential 10 rebates for future sessions.
2. Private Health Insurance
In some cases, you may potentially access subsidies through your private health insurance extras cover. Please confirm with your insurance provider if your policy includes psychology sessions. If so, check with the practice to ensure they are registered with your insurance provider. With enough lead time, we may be able to register with your insurer.
If eligible, the psychologist Brisbane will provide you with an invoice which you can use to claim the private health insurance rebate via your insurance provider or funding body.
Unfortunately, you cannot use your private health insurance ancillary cover to top up the Medicare rebates to cover the gap payment. This would give the appearance of ‘double dipping’, and only the government can get away with that. So, you need to decide if you will use Medicare or your private health insurance ancillary cover to pay for any psychological services you receive. That is, you can either access rebates from Medicare by following the claiming process or claim where available on your insurer's ancillary benefits.
Other Funding Options
- Other funding schemes for psychological treatment in Australia include:

If you are eligible for funding via one of these schemes, your psychologist may need to be registered with the funding organisation for you to be able to claim rebates or seek reimbursement. Please confirm with your psychologist prior to booking to ensure an accurate understanding of eligibility and treatment costs.
